As a technical manager, Small takes a lead role in every aspect of a project’s technical work, including data acquisition, security, verification, cleaning, imputation, and analyses. She manages technical staffing, budgeting, timelines, and work plans and sets and monitors the technical standards that other team members follow when working with project data. Small has worked on the Supporting Healthy Marriage project, which provided marriage education classes and case management support to low-income couples. She is currently working on the Head Start CARES project, which is testing the effects of a set of evidence-based strategies to improve the social and emotional development of children in Head Start classrooms. In the recent past, Small worked on the evaluation of the UK Employment Retention and Advancement Project, which offered financial incentives to the unemployed and underemployed to gain, retain, and advance in work, and the Working toward Wellness evaluation, which sought to increase economic independence by offering counseling and work support to an unemployed and depressed population. A Statistical Analysis System (SAS) user since 1986, Small is Advanced SAS Certified and has authored and presented professional papers at SAS conferences. Prior to her work on social research issues, Small worked in the life and health insurance industries for Prudential and HIP. She received her MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University with concentrations in social research and school social work.
