MDRC Mourns the Loss of Larry Stupski, Former MDRC Board Member
The Board of Directors and the staff of MDRC mourn the passing and honor the memory of Larry Stupski, business executive, philanthropist, and former MDRC Board member. Larry died earlier this month.
Larry served on the MDRC Board of Directors from 2000 to 2003. His wisdom helped strengthen the organization, and his passion for education pushed MDRC to focus more on schools and younger children. In particular, he provided invaluable guidance on the development of MDRC's K-12 education portfolio.
Larry spent nearly 20 years as an executive at The Charles Schwab Corporation, the investment firm. He served as president and chief operating officer from 1981 to 1992 and as vice chairman from 1992 to 1997.
In 1996, Larry and his wife Joyce founded the Stupski Foundation. The Foundation sought to enhance the life options of the 10 million children in large public school districts across the country. It made its mark on district-level reform and innovation and in supporting ways to increase student engagement and achievement in individual schools. The Foundation’s focus on leadership, management, and governance — together with its commitment to sticking with district-wide reform efforts over long periods of time — made its work unique.
Besides serving on the MDRC Board, Larry was a member of the boards of several significant education and human services organizations. He was also a member of the Standards Commission for the State of California. Born in Houston, Texas, he was a graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
MDRC extends its condolences to Joyce and the entire Stupski family.
