Don’t Give Up on Criminal Justice Reform

Anyone in New York worried about the effects of eliminating cash bail just has to look across the Hudson River. New Jersey implemented its own reforms in 2017, and each passing year shows it to be an unmitigated success.
In November the MDRC Center for Criminal Justice Research released a new report that found that New Jersey’s bail reform has had positive effects throughout the criminal justice system, including fewer arrests for low-level crimes, jail populations shrinking at greater rates than expected, and more defendants waiting for trial without court-imposed conditions. Meanwhile, crime rates remain low.....
